AMERICA/PERU - “My meeting with John Paul II”: as the Cause for the Beatification of Pope Wojtyla opens in Rome, thousands of Peruvians will remember and pay tribute to the late Pope

Lima (Fides Service) - Tomorrow 28 June at Santa Ursula Education Centre in the capital Lima the Catholics of Peru, parishioners, members of church movements and fraternities, clergy, men and women religious, young people, school children together civil authorities and diplomats will take part in a Commemoration in honour of Pope Wojtyla with the title “My Meeting with John Paul II”.
At the same time and in communion with thousands gathered in St John’s Cathedral Basilica in Rome for the solemn ceremony to open the Cause for the Beatification and Canonisation of Pope John Paul II ‘the Great’, Peruvians in communion with the universal Church will pay tribute to the late Pope and reflect on his life in grateful memory.
The commemoration will open with an address by Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani, Archbishop of Lima and Primate of Peru, who will reflect on the ‘greatness’ of the example and life of Pope Wojtyla, his 26 years Pontificate and his precious legacy for the whole of humanity. This will be followed by a talk on the life of the Pope by historian José Agustín de la Puente y Candamo, a reflection on the late Pope’s heroic virtues by journalist Miguel Humberto Aguirre and a video on some of the numerous apostolic journeys made by the late Pope including the visits to Peru in 1985 and 1987.
