Beirut (Fides Service)- “A great Pope who always kept a special place in his heart for Lebanon” was how Pope John Paul II was described by Cardinal Pierre Nasrallah Sfeir, Patriarch of Antioch of the Maronites speaking to Fides. “The Pope was close to the people of Lebanon all through the tragic years of the civil war. His Apostolic Exhortation “Une Espérance nouvelle pour le Liban” written in Mary 1997 is a document which reveals his love for our country” said Cardinal Sfeir. “Finally I would mention the fact that John Paul helped to change the destiny of the world playing an essential role in the fall of communism in eastern Europe”.
