San Jose de Costa Rica (Fides Service) - On Wednesday 2 February at the offices of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Costa Rica, an agreement for co-operation to develop joint programmes, exchange experience and various sorts of suitable initiatives to improve the school system in Costa Rica was signed between the Catholic Church in Costa Rica and the Ministry of Education.
The agreement, signed for the local Church by Bishop Jose Francisco Ulloa Rojas, of Limon, President of the Bishops’ Conference and Education Minister Manuel Antonio Bolanos Salas, recalls the valid contribution offered by the local Church to education in the history of the country, to form a national identity, culture and strengthen the political system. It also recognises the validity of Catholic pastoral activity, underlining that it is an unquestionable basis of Costa Rica’ school system because it fosters “the intellectual growth of the person and teaches ethic and religious values, worthy family life in keeping with Christian traditions and civic values proper to a democracy”.
The agreement underlines among other things, the Church’s preferential option for the poor and excluded and marginalised sectors and states that the government of Costa Rica recognises “the importance of education not only for integral development of the human bring but also to break the vicious circle of poverty and guarantee social development according to principles of justice and solidarity”.
Commitments taken by the parties which signed the agreement are as follows: “The Ministry for Education will make every effort to improve the quality of education in Costa Rica, especially with regard to values and formative aspects. At the same time it is committed to guaranteeing education in rural areas and city outskirts, and in general the poor and neglected areas. For its part the Bishops’ Conference will support these efforts and actions within the framework of this agreement”.
