Friday, 11 September 2015

Bombay (Agenzia Fides) - "The event is meant to affirm our belief in God and learn from the sacrifice Jesus Christ made. By participation, Catholics learn to sacrifice, share and nourish", said Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay, who announced the purpose of the next National Eucharistic Congress that the Indian Church will celebrate from 12 to 15 November. As reported to Fides, the Congress will be attended by over 5,000 delegates from all 167 dioceses in India. The Congress will not only have a spiritual dimension but will address social issues such as women's empowerment and the protection of creation in India. "Through Eucharist, the Indian Church makes an attempt to show the necessity of service and reach out to mankind".
In Bombay the last International Eucharistic Congress was held in 1964. This year, the National Congress will commemorate the golden jubilee of the 1964 Congress. The next Congress is scheduled for January, 2016, in Cebu, Philippines. A video-recorded message from Pope Francis will also be relayed at the Congress. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 11/09/2015)
