ASIA/LEBANON - Lebanese crisis, a delegation of Hezbollah meets with Maronite Patriarch

Thursday, 10 September 2015

Beirut (Agenzia Fides) - Yesterday, September 9, a delegation of the Shiite Party of Hezbollah, led by the President of the Political Council Ibrahim Amin el-Sayyed met the Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros Rai in Bkerké, at the patriarchal seat. At the end of the meeting, the official spokesman of the Shiite Party reported that the regional situation and the need for dialogue among the different components of the country were the main issues of the meeting, with the aim of leading the nation out of the crisis.
Patriarch Rai - as reported by Lebanese sources consulted by Agenzia Fides - stressed the urgent need to get out of the political paralysis that since May 2014 has not allowed the election of a new President. The Primate of the Maronite Church stressed that the institutional vacuum is at the root of popular discontent and new social tensions.
In the complex institutional system of Lebanon, the President of the Republic is reserved to a Maronite Christian. The official spokesman of Hazbollah reiterated yesterday that the Shiite Party considers General Michel Aoun - leader of the Free Patriotic Movement - one who "embodies the necessary characteristics to be a Head of State".
