ASIA/AFGHANISTAN - Violence prevents aid workers to provide safe medical care

Thursday, 9 July 2015

Kunduz (Agenzia Fides) - Violence and vandalism against people and health care facilities in the country increase. Just a few days ago, armed members of Afghan Special Forces entered the trauma centre run by the humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in Kunduz, they cordoned off the facility and began shooting in the air. After approximately one hour, the armed men left the hospital compound. MSF’s centre is the only facility of its kind in the whole north-eastern region of Afghanistan providing high level life-and limb-saving trauma care. Here, all patients can receive free medical and surgical care safely. In 2014, more than 22,000 patients received care at the hospital and more than 5900 surgeries were performed. The threats to MSF personnel and patients and the inability to provide medical care in a safe environment, forces operators to temporarily suspend activities. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 09/07/2015)
