ASIA/MALAYSIA - Inter-religious prayer and solidarity chain for seaquake victims

Monday, 3 January 2005

Kuala Lumpur (Fides Service) - Although Malaysia was less severely affected by the 26 December tsunami compared to other Asian countries (100 reported dead but many still missing especially on the islands of Peang and Kedah), religious communities are organising prayers and aid for the victims. A Malaysian nun told Fides that Christians gathered with Muslims, Buddhists and Taoists to pray for the victims and the people of Malaysia are responding generously to an appeal launched by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who returned early from his holidays to the capital Kuala Lumpur to co-ordinate aid, especially shelter for for the homeless.
Mr Badawi cancelled New Year festivities and called on the people to make a great effort of prayer and solidarity.
