AMERICA/CHILE - Bishops' statement: "The right to truth, forgiveness is not impunity"

Wednesday, 6 May 2015

Santiago (Agenzia Fides) - The Standing Committee of the Episcopal Conference of Chile published yesterday, May 5, a statement on the crisis of trust and credibility that is felt in the Country, entitled "Coexistence in Chile: ethics challenge and respect for our dignity".
In this document, sent to Agenzia Fides, the Bishops are asking themselves what happened in the life of the nation to find themselves now with a devastated social fabric and where there is no trust. They add that it is worrying to note the loss of confidence in social relations and in leadership at all levels: in the field of politics, economy, schools, universities and even in the Catholic Church.
It is time for deep introspection - underlines the text - both personal and institutional, which should also lead to an act of forgiveness: "Chileans have both the right to truth and justice, but also the possibility of forgiveness, which is not the same thing as impunity".
The Chilean Bishops conclude by indicating the need to rediscover that the power of authority is to serve others and misusing that power causes damage: "We are still in time to banish the idolatry of money and corruption, to assess the political action, to recognize the contribution of so many workers and businesses ... finally, to correct our mistakes and together strengthen the soul of Chile".
