ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - From the disaster in Sewol, a seed of peace and resurrection

Friday, 10 April 2015

Seoul (Agenzia Fides) - The disaster of the Sewol ferry can become a seed of peace and resurrection: with this spirit the Korean Church is experiencing a time of prayer, a year after the tragedy on 16 April 2014, when the sinking of the ferry caused the death of 295 people.
As refered to Fides by the Church of Seoul, a memorial Mass for the first anniversary of the sinking will be held on April 16 in Myeongdong Cathedral, presided by Cardinal Andrew Yeom Soo-jung, Archbishop of Seoul. Even the Federation of Catholic students will celebrate a memorial Mass on April 12, which will see the participation of university students and representatives of the families of the victims. Some parishes in the Archdiocese of Seoul will join in commemorating the event.
"Our prayers and thoughts and our blessings are with the families of the victims. May the Lord grant them strength and comfort", said the Cardinal in his homily.
As we celebrate the joy of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the faithful of the Archdiocese of Seoul prayed for the victims of the disaster and will continue to do so during the Easter season.
During the Easter period, the sale of hand-painted Easter eggs was organized out of the Cathedral of Seoul. Part of the proceeds will go to the families of the victims, partly to fund a nursery school that takes care of children in North Korea, as a symbolic gesture to spread the hope of Easter around the world.
