AMERICA/NICARAGUA - Lent: journey of liberation to fight indifference and selfishness

Monday, 9 March 2015

Managua (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishops of the Episcopal Conference of Nicaragua (CEN) sent a message yesterday to the national community, on the occasion of Lent, in which they complain inter alia, about the crisis due to political violence and the lack of justice that prevails in the country.
"The indifference that much of our society shows regarding the serious social and political problems of the country is worrying" the Bishops said in their message, sent to Agenzia Fides and sent to in all the dioceses. "It is a generalized way of doing politics – they say – that highlights that there is little closeness to the people, the interest to solve real problems and to take into consideration their expectations and their opinions".
They also define "the fact that politics in the country is dominated by the forgetfulness of the common good, ambition, authoritarianism, lawlessness and especially corruption as something which is very serious. It is a serious sin", the message reads.
Likewise they deplore the insensitivity of those in government and society in general before the protest and the pain of the elderly, workers, women, youth and peasants: "We are getting used to acts of repression and criminal violence, where families and communities in rural areas live in anguish". The message then dedicates a chapter to great national projects that, say the Bishops, should be put at the service of the human person.
In conclusion, CEN invites us to live Lent as a journey of liberation in order to be able, together, to overcome the temptation of indifference and selfishness, dedicating oneself to personal and communal prayer. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 09/03/2015)
