AMERICA/CUBA - Nearly half a million children will be vaccinated against polio

Havana (Agenzia Fides) - From 1962, when polio was eliminated in Cuba to 2014, about 83 million doses of vaccine have been administered in the Country. Now, in this time of year the first of two stages of the National Campaign of polio vaccination is aimed at nearly half a million children in the age group between 30 days and one year, while the second stage, scheduled from April 29 to May 3, will be aimed at children up to 9 years of age. According to the immunologist founder of the program of the Ministry of Health, the vaccine should not be administered to children who have high fever, vomit or diarrhea. In Cuba, yellow fever was eradicated in 1908 and smallpox in 1923. According to experts, thanks to vaccines other preventable diseases are under control, mortality and infection for typhoid fever and hepatitis B have decreased. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 04/03/2015)
