AMERICA/CUBA - First steps in process to re-establish USA Cuba relations

Thursday, 19 February 2015

Havana (Agenzia Fides) – America's Democratic MP Nancy Pelosi and Cuba’s foreign minister Bruno Rodriguez met in Havana as part of the process to restore diplomatic relations between their respective countries. The meeting held yesterday 18 February, continues on from the start of bilateral dialogue in January. Nancy Pelosi today will meet Cardinal Jaime Ortega y Alamino, Archbishop of San Cristobal de la Habana, leading member of the Catholic Church on the Island, community leaders and other diplomats. Today the programme includes a press conference in which, according to local Fides sources, America’s representative will speak about important issues concerning agriculture and trade relations between the two countries.
The negotiation groups of Cuba and the United States had a first two day round of talks 21 and 22 January in Havana, making the first step to re-establish relations interrupted since 1961, with the re-opening of embassies as one of the priority questions. A report sent to Fides by Palabra Nueva the review of the archdiocese of San Cristobal de La Habana, says: “The process of normalising relations will take time, it will be difficult some times, easier other times, but the first step has been taken, the most important, because it dissolved the paralysis...".
