AMERICA/MEXICO - Migrants: a phenomenon which is difficult to quantify

Tuesday, 10 February 2015

Nuevo Laredo (Agenzia Fides) - Although the number of migrants who arrive at the border in Nuevo Laredo (Mexico) has decreased compared to previous years, the concern of the Bishop of the Diocese, His Exc. Mgr. Gustavo Rodriguez Vega, remains high for the risks these people face when they enter Mexico.
The Bishop himself, in a note sent to Fides, said: "We always pay attention to what is happening, because the phenomenon involves many threats that await migrants". In particular, he recalls the difficulties migrants have to get on trains, "and this has caused the decline in their numbers".
The diocese welcomes those who arrive in this city from central America, as well as those who are expelled from the United States.
Mgr. Gustavo Rodriguez Vega recalls that last week the Bishops in southern Mexico met to discuss the issue of migrants who come here from different countries of Central and South America (see Fides 02/02/2015), and defines this meeting as "very important".
The note sent to Fides also reports the data of the Casa del Migrante in the city of Nuevo Laredo: in 2013, 7,263 people had been accepted, including Central Americans and Mexicans expelled from the United States. The figure is similar to that of last year, 2014, when up to November last year, the Casa had welcomed about 7,000 people, including 310 children. Among them 137 were foreigners: 70 percent came from Honduras and the remaining 30 percent from El Salvador. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 10/02/2015)
