AMERICA/MEXICO - "The jungle law" does not stop theft

Wednesday, 7 January 2015

Tehuacan (Agenzia Fides) - After the lynching which took place on January 5 in the village of La Cantera (Puebla, Mexico), where one person was killed and three others were seriously injured by locals, the Bishop of the Diocese of Tehuacan, His Exc. Mgr. Rodrigo Aguilar Martínez denounced the seriousness of the use of lynching as a solution to the recurrence of theft, because the "jungle law" does not bring justice and peace, but instead a ferocious spread of bestiality.
In the note sent to Fides from a local source, Mgr. Aguilar Martinez said he was in favor of the fact that citizens organize themselves to protect themselves and their property from theft which occurrs more and more frequently due to the growth of criminal gangs in the city and the lack of responsibility of the authorities, but stressed that it is serious to resort to violence to solve the problem. "One has to be aware of the serious deterioration of the social fabric - the Bishop said - of the increased crisis of legality and morality of which we are all responsible, obviously some more than others, because parents, civil and religious authorities, educators, entrepreneurs, professionals, the media, citizens and Christians are involved".
