ASIA/PAKISTAN - Civil society: "The Taliban and Pakistan are incompatible"

Wednesday, 17 December 2014

Lahore (Agenzia Fides) - The massacre of Peshawar marks a division in the history of Pakistan and incontrovertibly establishes that "the Taliban and Pakistan are incompatible": says a note of the "Human Rights Commission of Pakistan" (HRCP), the main Pakistani NGO committed to the defense of human rights and distributed widely throughout the country. What happened in Peshawar is "a national tragedy where everyone is called to reflect", says the note sent to Fides, referring to the government of Nawaz Sharif that had tried to dialogue and find an agreement with the Taliban.
According to the HRCP, it is "a national tragedy of immense proportions, the worst in history". "Nothing justifies a brutal massacre against children", notes the text, stressing the absolute "incompatibilities between Pakistan and the Taliban": The tragedy "proves once again that Pakistan will not live in peace until the Taliban insanity is defeated".
The NGO asks the federal government to "continue this battle, making it a priority, at all levels" and "punish those who ordered the massacre of children". "The fight against the Taliban - it concludes - is the fight for the lives of children in Pakistan and means to ensure them a safe future from the brutality that the militants represent".
