ASIA/PAKISTAN - Missio Christmas Campaign for Asia Bibi

Friday, 5 December 2014

Achen (Agenzia Fides) - Missio-Achen, the German section of the Pontifical Mission Societies, has launched a Christmas Campaign of prayer and solidarity in aid of Asia Bibi, the Pakistani Christian woman, married and mother of five children, falsely accused of blasphemy and facing the death penalty. On behalf of all German Catholics Missio presented to, Human Rights Commissioner of Germany’s federal government, Christoph Strässer, a petition bearing 18,425 signatures collected in just three months. The petition asks the government of Berlin to "make every diplomatic effort to achieve the release of Asia Bibi and allow her to live with her family in safety and in peace."
Asia Bibi was arrested on 19 June 2009 and sentenced to death in 2010. The court of appeal confirmed the death penalty, but recently a new appeal was presented to the supreme court of Pakistan. According to Missio, this happens "because Pakistan still has a law regarding blasphemy".
Missio calls for the law to be abolished and launches a great initiative of prayer all during the period of Advent and Christmas especially using the new social media, Facebook, Twitter and Google plus. Believers are asked to light a candle and say special prayers for the wellbeing of Asia Bibi and her family . (PA) (Agenzia Fides 5/12/2014)
