ASIA/JORDAN - Caritas Jordan in Salt launches ”Winter Campaign”

Salt (Agenzia Fides) – On Tuesday 2 December Ahliyyah school in Salt hosted the opening meeting for the launching of the Winter Campaign organised by Caritas Jordan in the area surrounding this historic Jordanian city. Participants included the director of Caritas Jordan, Wael Suleiman, the mayor of Salt Khaled Khashman, heads of competent government departments and as well as representatives of local Christian and Muslim communities. During the meeting Sheikh Mohammad Qanawi thanked Caritas for its activity to assist the less fortunate sectors of the population, whereas the Greek Orthodox parish priest Jubrail Ta’amneh spoke of exemplary solidarity among the different religious communities in Salt, saying it was paradigmatic of the collaboration which usually marks relations between the different religious communities present in the kingdom. At the end of the meeting 200 food parcels were distributed to 200 families most in need. The first Catholic school beyond the Jordan was built in an abandoned hovel in Salt in 1869 by Fr Jean Morétain, a priest of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. (GV) (Agenzia Fides 3/12/2014)
