AFRICA/TUNISIA - "Tunisian society is maturing a democratic consciousness" notes Fr. Alamat

Monday, 27 October 2014

Tunis (Agenzia Fides) - "There is an atmosphere of hope and confidence. The very fact that the elections were conducted in an almost peaceful manner is gratifying for everyone" says Fr. Jawad Alamat, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) in Tunisia, where yesterday, Sunday, October 26, legislative elections were held. The eve of the vote was marred by the death of six people, Islamist extremists suspected, during the assault on the outskirts of Tunis.
Fr. Jawad notes that "compared to the 2011 elections, which were the first truly free and fair elections, Tunisians have made great strides and have realized one important thing: that there is diversity in society and there must be mutual respect for the common good in a democratic environment".
"That is what I perceive talking to ordinary people", continued the Director of the PMS in Tunisia. "There is, indeed, the knowledge that there are crises and economic problems, that security is threatened by those who reject the democratic game. Despite all this, I feel strongly dominated by optimism. So I believe we are on the right track to make Tunisians remain faithful to their availability regarding openness and dialogue" concluded Fr.Alamat. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 27/10/2014)
