Tuesday, 9 November 2004

Addis Ababa (Fides Service)- The Ethiopian government’s Commission for Disaster Prevention has warned that the country may face famine in 2005. According to the Salesian Missionaries’ news service, food shortage could affect as many as 12 million people already by the end of this year 2004. Lack of rain and assistance for farmers were indicated as possible causes. The food situation in many parts of the country is deteriorating. The Commission said that the scale of the shortage will only be clear after the next harvest. In 2002 a food crisis in Ethiopia left 14 million people without guaranteed daily nutritional support.
