Tuesday, 22 January 2013

Asmara (Agenzia Fides) - Calm seems to have returned in Asmara, capital of Eritrea, where last night a group of soldiers occupied the Ministry of Information. From the limited information that come from the Country, the mutineers, about 200 soldiers supported by some tanks, demanded the release of political prisoners (which is estimated to be between 5,000 and 10,000 out of a population of 6 million) and the application of the 1997 Constitution. The protest seems to have calmed down after the government had accepted some of the military’s requests. According to diplomatic sources quoted by international news agencies, the situation is calm in Asmara and state television resumed the broadcast of its programs. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 22/01/2013)
