EUROPE/PORTUGAL - In Portugal cardiovascular illnesses kill 31,000 a year. Heart diseases cause one third of the deaths in the world

Rome (Fides Service) - According to a World Health Organisation survey in Portugal last year some 31,000 people died of cardiovascular illnesses and 8.6% of the country’s adult population suffers from diabetes.
Moreover cardiovascular illnesses cause one third of the deaths in the world: 17 million last year, 75% of these deaths is registered in developing countries.
Tobacco smoking is a risk factor. In Portugal about 44.2% of the men and 19.7% of the women are regular smokers. Other factors are diabetes, obesity, poor diet and lack of physical exercise. (AP) (13/10/2004 Agenzia Fides; Righe:13; Parole:120)
