Madrid (Agenzia Fides) - "Poverty is the greatest enemy of peace, and solidarity is the way out of the problem of poverty," said the Archbishop of Tegucigalpa (Honduras) and President of Caritas Internationalis, Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga, during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the "Mensajeros de la Paz", which was held in Madrid on October 2. The Cardinal denounced as "outrageous" the number of men and women who die of hunger and thirst, or lack of vaccines, "literally, in many parts of the world, it seems that we are back to living in caves." "There are millions of people who do not dream, cannot afford to make plans, because they can barely survive," the Cardinal emphasized.
Mensajeros de la Paz is an association founded in 1962 by Father Angel Garcia Rodriguez. It is an NGO of public, national and international nature. The main activity is to create functional houses to accommodate children and young people without a family environment or a situation of abandonment, providing them with the environment of a family. Over the years it has expanded its activities in the reception of other socially disadvantaged groups: women who are victims of domestic violence, the physically and mentally disabled and the elderly who live alone, abandoned or are penniless.
