AFRICA/EGYPT - "Calm elections, but in some polling stations voting was carried out on ballots which were not stamped" local sources say

Cairo (Agenzia Fides) - "The elections are taking place in a serene atmosphere, with a high turnout", said local Church sources to Fides from Cairo, capital of Egypt, where the first round of voting to elect the lower house of Parliament is being held (the vote will take place at different times in different areas of the country, ending January 3, 2012).
"Since men and women vote in separate polling stations, we have noticed a very good turnout of voters" say our sources, who point out that, despite the logistical difficulties, the vote took place in a calm environment. "We have collected the testimony of voters that found themselves in long queues, with 200 people in front of them. All polling stations are manned by the army and police and so far no major accidents have been reported. Today, however, long queues of voters have not been seen".
Our sources add that "unfortunately, in many seats, it was found that the ballots were not stamped. Complaints have already been submitted in this regard, while there is a rumor that the vote should be repeated, but there is no official news about it. If this problem were to be found in a large number of seats, this could be a potentially explosive issue in an already problematic situation" concludes the sources of Fides. (L.M.)
