Cachoeirinha (Agenzia Fides) - An indigenous youth involved in the attack against the school bus in Terena de Cachoeirinha has died. On June 3, 2011 an incendiary bottle was launched against the school bus with 30 high school native students. Four people were burned and were admitted to the hospital Santa Casa de Campo Grande. Now, before the death of Ludersvoni Pires, 28 years old, the Indigenous Missionary Council (IMIC) expressed solidarity and indignation: "We denounce the omission and negligence on behalf of the Brazilian State, that every day, more and more, generate violence and aggression against life and against the constitutional rights of these people".
In the note sent to Fides, we read that IMIC has asked the federal police to complete investigations and punish those responsible and have asked the federal Prosecutor to monitor the trial that will have to respond effectively to the people of Terena del Mato Grosso do Sul.
According to some witnesses, the attack on the school bus was caused by the dispute over the land. The Cachoeirinha Indigenous Land was in fact recognized as a territory of the Terena people in 2003, through a statement published in the Official Journal (DOU). Its boundary was designated by the federal government through the Order of declaration 791, on April 17, 2007. However, in 2010, the demarcation trial was suspended by the order issued by the judge of the Supreme Federal Court (SFC), Gilmar Mendes, in favor of a case proposed by former governor of Mato Grosso do Sul, Pedro Pedrossian, who has a farm in the area. The case is still pending at the SFC waiting for a decision to be taken by Minister Marco Aurelio. The 7,000 natives on the Cachoeirinha Indigenous Land live under the constant threat of farmers in the region. What one must note is that 36 000 hectares of land belonging to the natives, the Terena population occupies only 2,688.
The attack on the school bus is added to the large number of cases of violence against natives. According to the report data on violence against native people in Brazil in 2010, carried out by IMIC, from 2003 to 2010, 452 deaths were registered. Last year alone, 60 natives were killed and 152 received death threats. In 2010, the total number of Indians killed, 34 were from the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 30/08/2011)
