Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) - After the Mass celebrated yesterday in the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, the opening ceremony of "Laudato Sì Week" will take place today, May 22, at 10 am (local time), at the Dom Helder Câmara auditorium, at the headquarters of the Brazilian Episcopal Conference (CNBB), in Brasilia, broadcast live on the CNBB social network. The initiative is promoted by the National Conference of Brazilian Bishops (CNBB), through the Special Episcopal Commissions for the Amazon and for Integral Ecology and Mining, the Laudato si' Movement and the Pan-Amazon Ecclesial Network (REPAM- Brazil).
Eight years after the publication of Pope Francis' encyclical on the care of creation, Laudato Sì Week, which will end on Sunday 28 May, has the theme "Hope for the Earth. Hope for humanity". The program includes a series of activities at a national, regional and local level, as well as promoting a circuit of screenings of the film "The Letter: a message for our Earth", inspired by Laudato Si', in all regions of Brazil. Meetings with leaders of religious, political and social movements, public hearings, workshops for young people and an interreligious act are planned. The Week is part of the Laudato Si' Campaign, launched in March, to disseminate the documentary "La Letter" as a strategy to sensitize and mobilize the religious universe, especially Christian-Catholic, on the intrinsic issues of the Encyclical.
In the Regina Caeli Marian prayer, Pope Francis recalled the initiative yesterday with these words: "Today, Laudato si’ Week begins. I thank the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development and the many participating organizations. And I invite everything to collaborate in the care of our common home. There is such a need to put our capabilities and creativity together! Recent disasters remind us of this, such as the flooding that has hit the people of Emiglia Romagna in these days, to whom, with all my heart, I renew my nearness. Today, booklets on Laudato si’, which the Dicastery has prepared in collaboration with the Stockholm Environment Institute, will be distributed in the Square". (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 22/5/2023)
