AMERICA/COLOMBIA-One hundred thousand meals a day for the most needy: the Food Bank of the Archdiocese of Bogota celebrates 10 years of service

Bogota (Agenzia Fides) - Because of the 10 years since the founding of the "Banco de Alimentos" of the Archdiocese of Bogota, more than 400 nonprofit organizations that assist the most vulnerable and are on the books of the association "Banco de Alimentos", will present their projects at the Exhibition organized to celebrate the event on 1 and 2 September. Echoing the slogan of the association - "We are a bridge to unite people who want to serve" - the "Fair for 10 years of Social Food Bank" was in fact organized: it aims to be a window that opens to nonprofit organizations to present their social and productive projects in order to allow visitors to learn what is being done for the most vulnerable population.
In the note sent to Fides by the Archdiocese of Bogota says that the Food Bank is able to help more than 100 000 people and 13 000 families every day: this large segment of the population consists of about 78% of children, followed by adults, young and old people, through more than 700 nonprofit organizations branches, in order to improve their nutrition, wellness and provide institutional support. During these 10 years, the Food Bank was able to deliver over 80,000 tons of food. Only in 2010, 10,419 tons of food to the poor in Bogota and surrounding municipalities were delivered. Every day more than 100,000 meals are distributed and in the Food Bank warehouses there is between 35 and 40 tons of food.
