AMERICA/CHILE - "For a peaceful Day," Mgr. Ezzati’s appeal to the government and social parties before the general strike

Santiago (Fides Service) - "For a peaceful Day and respect for people". Is the title of a declaration by the President of the Episcopal Conference of Chile, His Exc. Mgr. Ricardo Ezzati Andrello, Archbishop of Santiago of Chile, published yesterday, August 23.
Mgr. Ezzati wanted to express "a word of encouragement and hope to believers and all people of good will" before the general strike that is taking place today and tomorrow across the Country.
In his statement, a copy of which was sent to Fides, Mgr. Ezzati urged "all the authorities and responsible of the political world, especially those of public education, to consider the important and essential requirements that emerged during the comparison".
Mgr. Ezzati also recalled the importance of the Bishops' document on political dialogue and launched an appeal to all social parties "to open a ray of hope towards permanent dialogue in order to build the Country based on justice, solidarity and social peace".
The Archbishop of Santiago concluded by expressing his concern for the health of young students who have been on a hunger strike for days. For Mgr. Ezzati the gesture of these young people "is a call where we cannot be indifferent".
There has been strong confrontation which has opposed students to the government (see Fides 11/08/2011 and 26/07/2011). According to the local press-CUT in Spanish, said that 80 social organizations will participate in the event of the "paro nacional" as well as the Concertacion Democratic parties (CD), these will also be joined by workers who follow the cause of students and public education.
