Monday, 25 July 2011

Lima (Agenzia Fides)- As part of the celebrations for the 21 years of their arrival in Peru, the nuns of the “Little Daughters of St. Francis of Assisi” have opened a new canteen for malnourished children in the area of Canto Grande complex, in the district of San Juan de Lurigancho, on the outskirts of the Peruvian capital. This work is the result of the initiative of lay people who work every day alongside the nuns of Italian origin. "Hogar San Francesco d'Assisi" already managed a small canteen for malnourished children in the Mangomarca area, where also several training courses are held, so that the young and the mothers can learn a trade and at the same time receive formation on fundamental values.
According to the note sent to Fides by the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, catering services are aimed at the young between six months and 3 years of age. To access the canteen the parents must meet the requirements asked by Hogar and must express their commitment to work for the development of their children.
The Little Daughters of St. Francis of Assisi have been in Lima since 1990. The purpose of their presence is proclamation, witness and sharing. The nuns are supported by collaborators and Peruvian personnel who share the same goals. Their missionary work is carried out in the preparation of the Sacraments and in Evangelization; in receiving children with severe malnutrition from 6 months to 3 years of age, to whom are given 2 meals, under medical supervision, proposing recreational activities aimed at stimulating the intellectual and psychomotor development, and providing psychological support and formation to mothers; in sharing what one is and what one has through the realization of some projects.
