AMERICA/PERU '-The Church and the natural resources: development, law and quality of life

Chaclacayo (Agenzia Fides) - "The issue of natural resources and the mission of the Church": this is the theme of the international seminar on mining industry (mining and hydrocarbons) and natural resources that takes place these days, from 14 to 16 June, in the city of Chaclacayo (30 km from Lima), Peru. The event is organized by the Department of Justice and Solidarity of the Latin American Episcopal Council (LAMEC) and Misereor. In the light of Aparecida, the seminar aims to promote "awareness of the Church, the People of God, challenges and future patterns of natural resources for development that affects the quality of life and threatens the rights of our people to take actions that promote human development, full, fair and sustainable".
According to information received by Fides, besides reflecting on the Church's position on these issues, the seminar aims to determine the present status of the mines on the continent, to analyze what the consequences are on the community, the social, political , ecological level and economic situation and to determine areas of pastoral action, in addition to proposing a biblical, theological and doctrinal reflection. At the seminar, about 70 members representing the countries of South and Central America, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and the Dominican Republic registered.
