Lima (Agenzia Fides) – The nationalist candidate Ollanta Humala has won the Peruvian presidential elections with more than 4-point lead over his opponent, the deputy Keiko Fujimori, according to preliminary surveys carried out by specialized companies. The company Ipsos-Apoyo, CPI and Datum, which presented their results to two different television channels, have agreed on Humala`s victory by a margin greater than 52%, despite the government agencies insist that they must wait for official results by the National Organism of electoral Processes.
According to the local press, the outgoing President of Peru, Alan Garcia, said just hours before the balloting: "Nobody knows who will win, but whoever wins, the results must be accepted, because the important thing is that the country can continue to produce jobs and welfare. My request is for peace and serenity. "Garcia, who should return the mandate to his successor on July 28, assured that the polls will be regular and excluded the possibility of electoral fraud.
The Archbishop of Lima, Cardinal José Luis Cipriani, said that reconciliation entails recognition of the truth and not the ideological imposition of a single thought, using a false tolerance to discredit opposing views. "So my wish, my prayer, there being differences, is addressed to the moment in which the Peruvian family will have to build unity in truth". Cardinal Cipriani insisted that after the election of the President, Peru will have to take advantage of the period of time "to promote an attitude of reconciliation, unity among all, in order not to harden the heart and not to continue to repeat a series of offensive statements.
