ASIA/TAIWAN-Pastoral Letter for the Year of the Laity of the Bishop of Hualien: promote growth and communion, walking towards holiness

Hualien (Agenzia Fides) - Promoting growth and communion in the diocese and among the parishes, walking towards holiness: is the motivation of the Year of the Laity indicated by Archbishop Philip Huang Jaw-Ming, Bishop of the diocese of Hualien, on the island of Taiwan, in his letter published on the occasion of this particular year. According to the Bishop of Hualien, the "Year of the Laity is also a preparatory stage towards next year, when the diocese celebrates 60 years of foundation, and the opportunity to lay the foundations for the World Youth Day in Taiwan in 2013 which will be hosted by our diocese. " Therefore Mgr. Huang invites "all parishioners to actively participate, to join together and grow together in the Lord. "
According to statistics published by Taiwan Catholic Church Directory 2010, the Diocese of Hualien, created on July 15, 1963, now has 56,446 faithful, 2 Bishops, 51 priests, 5 religious brothers and 92 religious sisters, 3 major and three minor seminarians, 46 catechists. It is divided into 10 deaneries, 45 parishes, 151 mission stations, 17 semi-public churches. The diocese also runs a professional institute with 1,210 members, a junior school with 2,339 pupils, 2 professional Training Centres with 164 students, an elementary school with 729 pupils, 16 kindergartens with 934 children, a college, a hospital with 35,941 patients, 2 clinics, two homes for the elderly with 181 guests, a Mental Rehabilitation Centre for children with 14 guests, 9 Centers of services for indigenous women, a community Center for the elderly.
