ASIA/INDIA - “Bhramyaman Pathabhavan”: mobile school for 40 students from disadvantaged villages

Saturday, 12 March 2011

Calcutta (Agenzia Fides) - A recent official survey shows that in the most remote and disadvantaged villages in the District of Hooghly, near Calcutta, there are still many children not attending school or who stopped going very shortly after commencing. The administrative authorities in the state of West Bengal have therefore initiated a “mobile school” project, requiring the collaboration of the Salesian “Don Bosco Bandel” Institute of Calcutta. According to information from the NSA, three teachers and a school bus, now known as “Bhramyaman Pathabhavan” (mobile school - the only of its kind in the Indian state), were made available for students, with all the elements necessary for class, such as a blackboard, lamps, chairs, cabinets, as well as a TV and audio equipment. The school will stop in a single centre for six months, offering classes and education for about 40 students, from Monday to Friday. After this period it will move and will offer the same service in another village, following the directions given by the district authorities. (AP) (12/3/2011 Agenzia Fides)
