Thursday, 3 March 2011

Bujumbura (Agenzia Fides) - “The aim of this visit is to express my respect and my support for all that is being done to rebuild the Country. I am also here to bring the greeting, blessing and prayer of the Holy Father,” said Cardinal Robert Sarah, President of the Pontifical Council “Cor Unum” to the local press, during his visit to Burundi (see Fides 1/3/2011). According to information sent to Fides by the Apostolic Nunciature, on 2 March the Cardinal met with the President of the Senate, Gabriel Ntisezerana, who thanked the Catholic Church for the assistance offered in rebuilding the Country from a spiritual, moral and development context.
The President of “Cor Unum” was then received by the President of the National Assembly, Pie Ntavyohanyuma, who also expressed gratitude for the Church's work in the areas of health, education and national reconciliation. The President of the National Assembly expressed his hope that the Church continues to support Burundi in the search for truth and reconciliation, in addition to rebuilding spiritually and materially. Card. Sarah was pleased to be welcomed by President Ntavyohanyuma in an atmosphere of collaboration between Church and State, and added: “I am pleased to know that the Catholic Church has always remained with the people of Burundi during difficult times.” (L.M.)
