AMERICA/COLOMBIA - Pro-life initiative by various parliamentarians, to complement Article 11 of the Constitution

Wednesday, 2 March 2011

Bogotà (Agenzia Fides) – The Catholic Church wishes to encourage a petition throughout Colombia to support the request by various senators and representatives who wish to present a piece of pro-life legislation to the House and to Congress, thereby complementing Article 11 of the Constitution. This initiative, undertaken by different parties and religious denominations, is led by lay people and Catholic politicians rather than by the Bishops to complement Article 11 of the Constitution which reads: “The life of every Colombian is inviolable. There is no death penalty.” They suggest that it be expanded as follows: “The life of all Colombians is inviolable from conception to natural death. There is no death penalty.”
The note sent to Fides by the Episcopal Conference of Colombia said further that the senators and representatives who promote this initiative, belonging to different political parties, attended the Bishops' Plenary Assembly in February in order to expose the legislative proposal to the Bishops. The Bishops hope to gather the signatures needed to support the initiative by 14 March. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 02/03/2011)
