AMERICA/BRAZIL - Scalabrini national campaign against human trafficking and forced labour

Wednesday, 23 February 2011

Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) – The network of ecclesial organisations of Scalabrini missionaries are promoting a petition for signatures in order to include the topics of “Human trafficking and forced labour” in the Fraternity Campaign (FC) 2013, which is usually coordinated by the National Conference of Brazilian Bishops (CNBB).
According to information received by Fides, for the Scalabrini addressing the issue of human trafficking, the FC will help to eradicate these crimes and to create public policies and social programs that guarantee assistance for victims. According to the network of religious organisations working in the field of human mobility and migration (the groups most affected by these criminal networks), the selection of these topics is urgent, because “human trafficking and forced labour are two profound wounds for society.”
“The proposal for a future FC on people trafficking, in addition to denouncing all situations that go against human dignity, becomes a call to bring the life and dreams of immigrants to the Church and to society. More than denouncing human trafficking, slave labour and similar practices, the FC, as a Lenten campaign should appeal to personal and social conversion, trying to regain respect and dignity for all migrants,” emphasises the network.
