ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - A Glossary to learn the Catholic faith for people engaged in mass media

Wednesday, 19 January 2011

Seoul (Agenzia Fides) – The Church in Korea has published a Glossary for use by workers in communications or mass media, to clarify the meaning of important terms within the Catholic faith. As Fides has been advised by the local Church in Korea, it is called the “Korean Catholic Glossary for those who are engaged in mass media”, achieved by the Commission for Social Communications for the Episcopal Conference of Korea, and contains 570 entries (in Latin, Korean and English) often used by the mass media when referring to the Church or the Catholic faith.
Father Ignatius Kim Min Su, Executive Secretary of the Commission, explained that “often journalists, when they write an article that touches on Catholicism, write it without having a comprehensive understanding of the material and terms they are using. Therefore, we saw the need for an instrument that may assist understanding and accurate communication of information that concerns the Catholic faith.” The text contains purely Catholic vocabulary terms from different areas, such as those used in the Liturgy, in theology and in the Catechism. It also includes an informative appendix that gives an overview of the fundamental contents of the Catholic faith, news on the Korean Bishops, the history of the Church in Korea and the Korean Catholic shrines.
