AMERICA/PERU - Archbishop Cabrejos asks presidential candidates to support proposals for the good of the country, regardless of ideology

Lima (Agenzia Fides) - The President of the Peruvian Bishops' Conference (CEP), Archbishop Miguel Cabrejos, asked the presidential candidates to not fall into the “politics of trivial things”, but to support the proposals to ensure the Country's development. All candidates for governing the country should take the line of seeking the common good, regardless of ideology.
In a statement issued by Peru's Andina news service, which was sent to Fides, the President of the Episcopal Conference confirms that presidential candidates must be united in serious matters, in those of great responsibility, not halting at trivial things or taking advantage of the political moment, but set out to do things that will go beyond the period of the government.
Archbishop Cabrejos considers it necessary that the candidates support public policies of the National Convention, especially the latest for the prevention of natural disasters. “The idea is to involve the presidential candidates because they play a part in the policy, because there are things that should exceed a period of one government,” he adds. In this regard, he states that “instead of fighting, arguing and throwing insults, candidates must present plans and projects, combining their efforts for the good of Peru.”
Currently in the running for the presidency of Peru are, among others, Alejandro Toledo (Peru Posible candidate) Luis Castaneda (National Unity) and Keiko Fujimori (Fuerza 2011). The elections are scheduled in Peru for 10 April, 2011. Approximately 20 million Peruvians are entitled to vote. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 21/12/2010)
