AMERICA/PERU - Growing soup kitchen offers 160 meals every day to children in rural communities of Cuzco

Cuzco (Agenzia Fides) – The soup kitchen for children in the “Patrón Salvador del Mundo” parish in the province of Calca, 50 km from the city of Cuzco in Peru, has been expanded, Fides was told by the Episcopal Conference of Peru. The kitchen, which is dedicated to the “Mamachi del Rosario” (Our Lady of the Rosary), provides about 160 meals to children from different rural communities of the Archdiocese of Cuzco.
The Parish Priest, Father David Yshuc Pure, records that this social service began in May this year and has become a reality thanks to the support of the Provincial Municipality of Calca and of a group of generous people who bring food and donate to the parish. The priest expressed the wish that the parish kitchen may serve an even greater number of people, which means asking for help from various public and private institutions in order to continue to help the many needy people of that district, especially the children.
According to a report by Caritas of Cuzco, Calca is part of one of the poorest areas where Caritas is also involved. The Archdiocese of Cuzco includes 13 provinces, of which 8 are served by Caritas because they were considered poor or extremely poor. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 29/11/2010)
