AMERICA/PERU - 11th Social Week: integral human development at the light of “Caritas in Veritate”

Monday, 25 October 2010

Lima (Agenzia Fides) – Today marks the beginning of the eleventh edition of the National Social Week, sponsored by the Catholic Church, which is characterized by the presence of important national and international guests, and will aim to study and reflect on the message of the Encyclical "Caritas in Veritate," providing the main proposals in the current context, nationally and internationally. This event also aims to promote and deepen the dialogue between the different sectors of society and the State, within the perspective of human development and peace-building in the country.
The note sent to Fides from the Peruvian Bishops' Conference said that the XI Social Week will be held October 25 to 29 at the school “Colegio de Jesus,” in Pueblo Libre. This year's theme will refer to integral human development in the light of Caritas in Veritate, considering that development is not only economic well-being or improvement of infrastructure, but also the mental health of all inhabitants of the country and harmonious relationship with nature, currently affected by global warming.
The starting point for reflection is precisely the encyclical of Pope Benedict XVI, "Caritas in Veritate," and the Document of Aparecida, which encourage people to seek an alternative model of integral development in solidarity on the basis of an ethic that includes responsibility of a real human and natural ecology, based on the Gospel values of justice, solidarity, and the universal distribution of goods.
