AMERICA/PERU - "El Señor de los Milagros": “Patron of the Catholicism in Peru and symbol of popular piety and devotion”

Lima (Agenzia Fides) – During the traditional celebration of homage paid by the Archdiocese of Lima to the “Christ of Pachacamilla,” widely known as "El Señor de los Milagros” (The Lord of Miracles), Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani, Archbishop of the capital city, thanked the Peruvian authorities for the law which declares the Lord of Miracles “Patron of the Catholicism in Peru and symbol of popular piety and devotion.”
"Lord, bless this wonderful people and the entire Peruvian family. Also, as you pass through the streets of this city, we ask you to bless us, to listen to us, this we pray..." said the Cardinal during the ceremony on Monday, October 18th, before the image of the “Purple Christ” as it is called by the Peruvians. The Cardinal urged the crowd of faithful gathered in the Plaza Mayor of Lima to humbly ask the Lord of Miracles for forgiveness, blessing, and guidance. In the note sent to Fides by the Archdiocesan press office, it says that the Cardinal reminded the faithful of the importance of the family based on marriage between a man and a woman and as primarily responsible for educating their children in the faith.
All the Peruvian media sources have reported on the news that the President of the Republic, Alan Garcia, has promulgated the law that declares the "Lord of Miracles" as the “Patron of Catholicism in the Republic of Peru.” The rule previously approved by Congress, indicates the “Christ of Pachacamilla” as a symbol of popular piety and devotion.
