ASIA/PAKISTAN - Justice for Lubna: parents file complaint

Thursday, 14 October 2010

Rawalpindi (Agenzia Fides) – The parents of Lubna Masih, age 12, the girl raped and murdered by a group of Muslims in Rawalpindi (see Fides 13/10/2010), have filed a formal complaint to the police. Accepting, albeit with apprehension, the proposals made by non-governmental organizations who promised protection, material assistance, and legal assistance, today, October 14, Saleem and Guddi Masih went to the police station of Waris Khan, Rawalpindi, to denounce the terrible execution of their daughter.
The resistance that the two have shown thus far was out of fear. They still fear revenge and intimidation that may come in an effort to cover up the affair. Also, the influential friends of the men who perpetrated the crime, local Fides sources say, could try to influence the course of justice.
Non-governmental organizations such as “Life for All” and the “Christian Lawyer Foundation” believe, however, that it is absolutely necessary to bring the matter to the attention of the authorities and the public by pursuing the perpetrators through the courts. "It is a necessary step in combating impunity and defending the rights of Christians in Pakistan," Fides was told by Rizwan Paul, President of Life for All, a Christian-based NGO committed on a social and cultural level in the country. The NGO is looking for a new home for Lubna's parents, ensuring their protection, solidarity, and assistance in all aspects. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 14/10/2010)
