Wednesday, 6 October 2010

Santo Domingo (Agenzia Fides) - On Friday, October 1, an agreement between the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Dominican Republic, which provides training courses for government officials in the field of justice, immigration, and human rights in order to combat human trafficking, went into affect.
The training focuses on workshops and special seminars on the theme "human trafficking and human mobility." It provides for technical collaboration for the development of study programs, academic projects, and exchange of information.
The government of the Dominican Republic, through the Office of the Attorney General, has agreed to invest in the implementation of the training plan, according to educational standards proposed by the project, in addition to the authorization, together with IOM, of the basic requirements for the development of training and practice. For its part, the IOM has to identify and provide international experts in the area, providing technical support and material to be used in training.
The Attorney General Radhames Jimenez Pena stressed the importance of strengthening the training of officers of justice, considering that this organ is a fundamental part of the fight against human trafficking.
The head of the IOM mission in the country, Cy Winter, said that the contribution to the implementation of technical assistance will strengthen the work of combating crime and the treatment of victims.
Human trafficking has increased in recent years, especially in Brazil and Central America. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 10/06/2010)
