AMERICA/BRAZIL - Continental Mission Week: study of Aparecida Document and guidelines for Brazilian dioceses

Wednesday, 1 September 2010

Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) – "You are witnesses of these things" (Lk 24:48). This will be the theme for the Continental Mission Week to be held September 5 to 11 at the Mission Cultural Center (MCC) in Brasilia, Brazil. The event, organized by the Bishops' Commission for the Continental Mission, began in 2008 and is held every year in order to promote the Continental Mission in the Church in Brazil.
A note sent to Fides on the event says that "the meeting encourages the study of the Continental Mission in light of the Document of Aparecida (DAP) and helps prepare materials for the dioceses in Brazil. This meeting also offers perspectives and guidelines to promote the Continental Mission in our diocese," said the Executive Secretary of the National Missionary Council (Comina) and Consultant of the Bishops' Commission for Missionary Pastoral Care and Interecclesial Cooperation of the CNBB, Father Jose Altevir da Silva.
Each year, the number of participants at the meeting increases. At first, there were only delegates of the 17 regions, but this year the entries are open to all interested parties. According to Fr. Altevir, they expect to see 56 participants from all the regions of Brazil. The participants are priests, religious, and lay pastoral workers.
During these seven days, the participants will delve into various topics of missionary themes, including "Biblical Elements of Missionary Spirituality,” with biblical scholar and missiologist Father Sergio Bradanini; the theme "A Mission Parish, A Possible Project?"; advice from sociologist and theologian Father Jose Carlos Pereira; and "Projects and Methods for a New Evangelization," by the director of the St. Thomas Aquinas Institute of Belo Horizonte (MG), Father Manuel Godoy.
