AMERICA/PERU - 300 missionaries in the remote villages of the Northern Andes of Peru

Wednesday, 11 August 2010

Trujillo (Agenzia Fides) – As part of Continental Mission in the Archdiocese of Trujillo, 300 lay people in parishes along the coast were sent this week to 120 villages in the Sierra Trujillo (area in the Andes), in order to share the Gospel message of Jesus Christ with their brethren living on the outskirts of the ecclesiastical jurisdiction.
The disciples and missionaries left on Sunday, August 1, from their parishes, after a Mass and a “sending-out” ceremony led by their local parish pastors. The missionaries, youth and adults, have been preparing with great enthusiasm and for a long time leading up to this mission experience.
In carrying out their work, the missionaries have taken a letter of greeting signed by the Archbishop of Trujillo, Archbishop Miguel Cabrejos Vidarte, OFM and by Auxiliary Bishop Javier Travieso, CMF with them. In this letter, addressed especially to the faithful of the Andes, they ask them to receive the the messengers of God with joy and prayerfully accept the Gospel message.
The great mission of the Archdiocese in the Andes area of the Department of La Libertad is possible thanks to the Permanent Mission program implemented by the Archdiocese of Trujillo, which has emerged following the launch of the Continental Mission in Peru, whose purpose is to go to meet the faithful and proclaim the Good News of the Gospel.
The Department of La Libertad (Peru) is the only department that includes the three geographical regions: Costa (Coast), Sierra (Andes), and Selva (Forest). Some of these villages, for example in the area of Huamachuco, are located at over 3,200 meters above sea level. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 08/11/2010)
