ASIA/PAKISTAN - UNHCR appeal for 2 million refugees from flooding

Thursday, 5 August 2010

Rome (Agenzia Fides) – Floods and landslides are hitting northwest Pakistan and have already killed 1,500 people and displaced two million people now in need of immediate help to survive. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has already distributed 10,000 tents and other aid in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the two provinces most affected, with the goal of sending in another 20,000 as soon as possible before the cholera epidemic hitting the country spreads any further. The aid was distributed in the hard-hit villages of Tali and Sultan Kot in the region of Sibi, where about 2,030 houses were completely destroyed by torrential rains and flooding. The UN refugee agency has already been working on emergency relief for several days and appeals for aid to provide help for all those who are in urgent need. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 08/05/2010)
