OCEANIA/AUSTRALIA - Anti-Poverty Week 17 - 23 October

Friday, 30 July 2010

Sidney (Agenzia Fides) – Once again this year the world will mark UN Anti-Poverty Day on 17 October. And as customary in recent years Australia will be holding its Anti-Poverty Week 17 - 23 October. Anti-Poverty Week was established in Australia as an expansion of the UN's annual International Anti-Poverty Day on October 17. According to Australia's Catholic Social Justice Council, the main aims of Anti-Poverty week are to: Strengthen public understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty and hardship around the world and in Australia; Encourage research, discussion and action to address these problems, including action by individuals, communities, organisations and governments.
Last year more than more than 10,000 people took part in various initiatives organised by 1000 different entities. All kinds of activities are welcomed, the Bishops say, big and small, especially at the local level.
