Tuesday, 27 July 2010

Condoto (Agenzia Fides ) – One of the poorest regions of Colombia, Chocò, has been included in a Prolonged Aid and Recovery Operation , supported by the UN World Food Programme, to provid poor families with basic nutritious food. This humanitarian operation, which started in 2008 and will continue until at least the end of 2010, is a response to forced migration and other problems caused by violence in the area. The programme assists families forced from their homes and now living in conditions of serious food insecurity in a region marked by widespread violence. Free food aid distributed proportionally according to estimates by the Prolonged Aid and Recovery Operation, aims to improve the health, nutrition and education of displaced families and vulnerable categories of persons. The programme offers on the one hand basic education and on the other, fundamental assistance to the family unit in the period during which a family member is receiving education. By providing poor people with basic instruction and education the programme also fosters the creation of permanent goods such as homes, water supply systems and production projects.
