ASIA/INDIA - Cardinal Gracias: “Fundamentalism and anti-conversion laws are contrary to religious freedom ”

Wednesday, 14 July 2010

Bombay (Agenzia Fides) – “Religious freedom is the only authentic path to peace. The theme is most important for India and for the whole world: a decisive reflection on the world today and respect for basic human rights”. This was how Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay and president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India commented to Fides, the theme chosen by the Holy Father, Benedict XVI, for the celebration of the next World Day for Peace on 1 January 2011, “Religious freedom, the path to pace”.
Speaking with Fides, the Cardinal reflected on the theme within the context of India where society faces two serious issues: Hindu religious fundamentalism and “ anti-conversion laws”, in force in several states of India.
“In India's multireligious and multicultural society certain groups misunderstand religion, they exploit it for other ends and make it a reason for conflict disturbing the harmony of society. The local Catholic Church seeks to build good relations with everyone, fostering dialogue and respect for freedom: this is the effective path to peace, the supreme good. In this way we Christians strive to offer our contribution to building up the human family”, Cardinal Gracias told Fides.
The theme chosen by the Holy Father speaks also of the supreme freedom of conscience of every human person, including freedom of conversion, which cannot be undermined: “Respect for religious freedom means that no government or any other civil authority has the right to interfere with the essence and the profound freedom of the human heart. No one can tell another person which religion he or she must follow or how he or she must worship God. I have often said this in public and I will continue to do so. This is a fundamental human right and we, the Church, will defend this right, always. Whoever attacks this right, attacks peace and brotherhood ”. – the Cardinal told Fides.
