EUROPE/BELGIUM - Religions against discrimination and defamation on religious grounds

Wednesday, 14 July 2010

Bruxelles (Agenzia Fides) – As part of a second series of seminars on 'Islam, Christianity and Europe', today, 14 July, in Brussels, a study meeting on the theme on the theme “The role of religious actors in the fight against discrimination and defamation on religious grounds” will be attended by representative of Judaism, Islam and Christianity. Promoted by the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Union (COMECE), which represents all 24 of the continent's Bishops' Conferences, the seminar stems from the observation that “in recent years, discrimination and defamation on religious grounds has been a major problem in Europe and the European neighbourhood”. The seminar intends to respond to these questions: what past experiences with religious defamation in Europe teach us and how Churches and religious communities can respond to discrimination on religious grounds: what is their role to strengthen mutual understanding and how can they interact with civil society and politics to foster peaceful and tolerant societies?
