AFRICA/GUINEA BISSAU - A “year of plenty” for priestly vocations

Friday, 4 June 2010

Bafata (Agenzia Fides) – Deacons Admir Cristiano Barreiro, age 29, Francisco Fernandes, age 28, and Avito José Fernandes de Araújo, age 30, on Saturday, June 5 will be ordained priests in the Diocese of Bafata, Guinea-Bissau. The Bishop Pedro Zilli of Bafata has described the event as "a moment of grace" in one year "of plenty" for the number of priests ordained in the Church of Guinea Bissau. According to information received by Fides, the diocesan Curia, with the three being ordained June 5 will make a total of 9 new priests ordained in 2010, having attended the major seminary of Bissau. There are also two other future priests of the Diocese of Bissau to add to the list. The numbers indicate the growth of the local Church and the answer in faith, from Christian families. Indeed, the ordination of a priest is an important moment for the families of candidates, who in the consecration to the service of God and neighbor, accompany and offer the one the Lord has chosen from within their own family. Such participation is also expressed by certain elements of the local liturgy. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 06/04/2010)
